From the Ca' Savio campsite, getting to the area of St Mark's is easy. Here you will be captivated by the colours and architectural style of the Doge's Palace, which used to be the seat of government in ancient times when Venice was ruled by the Venetian Republic. The great rectangular square spreads before St Mark's Basilica, with its gilded mosaics and domes. Framed by the Procuratie Vecchie and Procuratie Nuove buildings, the square's wide porticoes are home to a number of longstanding cafés and shops.
br>On the northern side of the Square stands the fifteenth-century Clock Tower, which is famous for its bronze statues of two Moors, who sound the hour on a large bell. If you step under the tower and walk down the street called Mercerie, you end up in Rialto at the foot of the famous bridge over the Grand Canal.
